The Designer & Owner
James (Barry) Hartney
Barry’s love of nature, gardening, and the outdoors began at an early age in Augusta, Georgia. Inspired by his mother’s passion for gardening, he has been “playing in the dirt” for more than 50 years.
As a teenager, he started his own neighborhood landscaping business, and later attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, where he studied Ornamental Horticulture.
After college, Barry was recruited by Augusta National Golf Club as an Assistant Nurseryman, where he oversaw greenhouse and nursery operations and helped maintain the landscaping surrounding the iconic golf course and clubhouse. He also spent many years assisting with landscaping operations during The Masters Golf Tournament.
A naturalist at heart, Barry eventually moved to the Atlanta area, where he became a partner in a commercial and residential landscape design firm. A visit to Pinehurst for a golf outing changed everything. He fell in love with the beauty of the Sandhills and decided to move to the area, selling his share of the business to pursue a new chapter.
Barry went on to establish PineScapes, Inc., where he spent nearly 20 years designing, installing, and maintaining landscapes throughout the Sandhills. Along the way, he discovered a particular passion and talent for creating natural ponds, streams, waterfalls, and fountains.
In 2020, Barry founded Zen Ponds and Gardens to focus on what he loves most: creating beautiful, nature-inspired water features that bring a sense of peace and tranquility to everyday life.
Today, Barry combines more than 50 years of horticultural experience with a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of the Sandhills. Using organic elements such as stone, wood, water, plants, and fish, he creates thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces that feel like a natural extension of the landscape.
His goal is simple—to create a peaceful place where you can slow down, reconnect with nature, and enjoy your own personal retreat at home.
